RV Covers for the Hot Days of Summer

RV Covers for the Hot Days of Summer

When you started researching and looking for an RV cover to protect your motor home, trailer or camper, you had no idea how many different covers there are for recreational vehicles, did you? The more you researched, the more RV covers you found on the Internet. Before too long your head is spinning with too many details and you can’t remember the individual characteristics of each of the covers? TMI – too much information! You want to save money but you also want to get the RV cover that is right for your RV, the location and climate that you live in, and your wallet.

There are two immediate money savers to look for on the Internet. First is FREE Shipping. Do you have any idea how much an RV cover for a Class A motor home will weigh? The smallest Class A RV cover weighs around 34 pounds. Its weight alone is going to cost you if you have to ship it. Then depending on where the RV cover has to be delivered, you can be talking $50-60 in shipping alone.
The other item to consider, at least for now, is where is the company that you have ordered this RV cover located? If you deal with a small e-commerce business that is located out of your home state, you can save money on sales taxes as well.  With a cover costing anywhere from $200 - $500, you are looking at a savings of $15 - $40 by purchasing your cover from a state other than you own. So consider the size of the Internet e-commerce business and do a little research to see if you can save money these two ways.

To start with you must decide on the type of fit you want from your cover: contour fit, custom fit, or universal cover. A universal cover is like a generic "one size fits all" mass produced covering. The contour fit is made to the overall general dimensions of the average RV of that size. Custom fit covers are made to the exact dimensions of your RV. The only cover that I will discuss that is a true custom fit cover is the Carver cover made of Sunbrella™ material. When you go to purchase a custom fit RV cover you will be required to measure all aspects of your RV in order to give them the exact measurements of your individual RV. In my research I have found that many RV cover sites refer to their covers as custom- fit when they are actually contour-fit. Both the contour fit and custom-fit covers are made to fit the RV better with less movement thereby reducing scratching and wear on the RV’s exterior. With a custom fit cover there is better access to the doors and they have the better warranties. You will be able to tell when you research an actual custom fit cover; the price is definitely higher than either the universal fit or the contour-fit.

The RV cover was designed to protect the exterior walls of a recreational vehicle from the damages that occur by being exposed to the elements of its surrounding environment. The material used to make your individual protective RV cover is probably the best indicator of what type of protection your RV will need. The basic entry RV cover gives protection from dirt, dust, bird droppings, leaves that discolor the top and scratches that occur along the exterior sides. These “dust” covers are usually single layer covers that cannot stand up to heavy wind & snow and are not properly made to reflect the UV rays of the sun. Many of the covers made today are made of polypropylene. Polypropylene fabric is a breathable fabric that allows the rain and moisture to go through the fabric as well as evaporate. The discount RV covers made of polypropylene are usually a single-layer of fabric. It is an affordable, all weather protection that is water-repellent yet breathable to reduce mold and mildew. Fabrics treated with SFS AquaShed ® are water repellent. The water beads up on contact giving the cover maximum resistance to high humidity and rainfall. It also claims to add UV protection to the cover. These inexpensive RV covers are not recommended for areas of winter snow or intense summer heat.

Here is a list of the discount RV covers. These covers sell on the Internet are for areas of moderate climate. The following chart informs the buyer of the main features of the following discount RV covers. The prices listed below can be used to compare the cost of three Class A Motor homes depending upon the length of the Class A motor home.  Their warranties are usually in the 1-2 year range.

MIDDLEMAN RV COVERS

The materials used in the development of the “middleman” RV covers provide a little more protection especially for those of us who live in the areas of heavy snow and rain as well as heavy humidity. Polyesters treated with Presidium 600-denier reflects sunlight, and has a water-resistant coating to keep rain and bird droppings from damaging the vehicle's finish. The 600-denier construction is a strong, heavy weave that will resist abrasions. Covers made with X-Strength fabric claim that they are durable and have a custom UV protective fabric that protects against water, sun damage and dirt as well as tearing. The Tyvek polyethylene synthetic cover is three layers of fabric that claim to knock out the intense sunshine, moisture and UV rays while three layers of polypropylene are used on the top of many covers with single layers on the side. The three layers allow the cover to “breathe” so that snow & ice do not cause mold, mildew or inside damage to the RV. Many of these covers also claim to be UV resistant covers that reflect the UV rays away from the camper, trailer, or motor home. These covers cannot handle the extreme heat of the desert or the South.

Below you will find the six different covers that can be called the “middleman” of RV cover costs and the features that distinguish these covers from each other. These are the covers most recommended for heavy snow & rain. Their warranties are usually in the 2-3 year range,

BEST RV COVERS

The fabrics created for the best, “top shelf” of RV covers are specially designed with reinforcement in the fabric. The rip stop fabric of the PermaPRO RV cover is a true tear resistant fabric. It is 1 ply specially designed fabric that is reinforced at regular intervals with nylon cross hatching patterns. The advantages of ripstop are that small tears cannot easily spread and the fabric has an excellent strength-to-weight ratio. The Tru-weave fabric with the Durapel finish with a UV inhibitor is exclusively made for the Goldline RV covers. This is the best RV cover on the market because it is a strong, supple, water repellent cover that keeps the motor home or trailer cool in intense heat. Only time will tell if the new PermaPRO ripstop RV cover will out perform the Goldline cover. The Calmark Sunbrella is a custom made RV cover that is specially made to fit your RV only.
